Named after the Greek god of dreams, the Freenotes Morpheus is a modular metallic instrument consisting of a series of metal bars, each attached to its own resonator. A unique take on a most unusual mallet percussion instrument. Named after the Greek god of dreams, the Freenotes Morpheus is a modular metallic instrument consisting of a series of metal bars, each attached to its own resonator. With no damping, the notes buzz freely, allowing for lush, ringing pads and sharp attacks alike.

        AFRICAN BALAFON WITH SNARES

RECORDING THE BALAFON: French musician Jean-Philippe Rykiel contacted us about a unique type of African balafon in which each key had “snares” that vibrated when played, giving it a interesting buzzing quality. Sometimes called a “gyil”(JEE-le), it’s usually found in parts of northern Ghana, Burkina Faso, and south-eastern Mali. Hardwood keys are suspended over calabash gourds. Silk or paper covers small holes in the gourds which resonates to produce the characteristic buzzing. Rykiel has long been involved with West African musicians, having collaborated with both the wonderful Salif Keita and Youssou N’Dour. For the balafon however, he knew of a virtuoso player from magesy download Burkina Faso named Mamadou Diabate now living in Austria. He enlisted Mamadou to play the instrument for a recording session that he would conduct himself. The recordings then made their way to us, and the result is the instrument you find here. We hope you’ll find this instrument both curious and inspirational!

Essentially a mechanised, 20th Century variation on the classic metallaphone, the vibraphone adds a constant modulation to its resonator tubes by the use of motorised fans. The fans, or discs, cover the top of the resonator tube and spin in unison, allowing full or partial function of the resonator tube depending on which point of the cycle the motor is in. The resulting tone is a type of tremolo effect – shimmering, golden, & very wobbly indeed; due to all resonators modulating together and thus aggregating the effect on the decaying notes.

Inspired by the Blue Man group, we decided to build a PVC pipe thwacker thing… a ” Tube Drum ” .. technically known as a “plosive aerophone” . Starting with a very long 20 foot (6 metre) pipe (that’s a 57 Hz fundamental, for those without a calculator)… we thwacked, and we sampled and we sawed… we thwacked again, and we sawed again — we went back to the hardware store a few times — until one last little piece (6 inches / 16 cm) gave us the high C6. This gave us the ?ve octave completely multi-sampled 63 note Tube Drum.

What happens when you take a perfectly good instrument – one thats been around for hundreds of years – and completely rethink it? Many musicians have dug their hands into the piano, John Cage prepared it with bolts between the strings, others have strummed it or hit it with their hands, but one of the most ethereal and unorthodox techniques is that of bowed piano. First suggested by the composer Curtis Curtis-Smith in 1972, the technique uses flexible bows made from magesy download monofilament nylon fishing-line which are then coated in rosin. The nylon is threaded under the strings, and the performer can coax a sustained tone from magesy download the piano. Bowed piano has since been adopted and expanded upon by various other composers, including George Crumb and more extensively.

25 tuned plastic mouth-horns, or ‘Kazoos’. Recorded in stereo with 5 round robins per note, the Kontakt instrument doesn’t sound as silly as the name might suggest. Roll off the attack, lower the filter cutoff and you’ve got an atmospheric horn-pad synth instrument. Our custom KSP interface adds controls to increase the number of kazoos in the ‘section’, with options for adding pitch instability and variable note-off levels.

The original slab of Konkrete earned a five star review in SOS in September 2006. Back then, it snarled like an attitude-laden adolescent, its distinctive samples formed into 24 scratchy, glitchy, twitchy drum kits. Control was minimal but this didn’t stop it, and later Konkrete 2, which ran broadly along the same lines, from magesy download being equally ear-catching. For Konkrete 3, Soniccouture have upped the ante with a totally revamped interface and enhanced functionality. Better still, the kits of all three Konkretes are bundled together in this release, and upgrade deals are offered to owners of the previous libraries.
