Tonehammer is proud to present the mighty Kalimba. The Kalimba (Thumb Piano) is a tuned percussion instrument and a variant of the African Mbira. Its essentially a hollow wooden box with metal keys attached to it. The instrument is plucked with thumbs and the wooden box helps increase the resonance of the metal keys. However Tonehammer took it to the next level. We recorded the Kalimba in four different locations for ultimate user freedom. The user can choose between dry (close-micd in a small, dead room), wet (small hall), wetter (big hall / close mics) and wettest (big hall – far mics).

It has been said that this instrument could purify you mind, body, and soul. There is an opening in the bottom of the Koto which releases the sound that seems to penetrate your body. Programming includes velocity cross faded articulations, layered pads and flexible key mapping.
