    THE JOY OF EFFECTS

Broadly speaking, there are two ways to use effects in music production as mix tools, or as creative processors. These two applications are effectively the polar opposite of one another. The former is all about transparency trying to improve the sound of an audio signal without making it obvious that an effect has been used on it. When it comes to creative processing though, the sound of the effect is precisely what we’re after. Whether that’s the spaced-out ambience of a long, drawn-out reverb, the wobbling repeats of a vintage delay, or the harmonically rich crunch of an analogue reverb. It’s these creative effects we’re focusing on in this issue. This month’s two main tutorial features are all about finding new and exciting ways to push sounds as far as you can, to create out-there, ear-catching results.

      ELECTRONIC GROOVES AND RHYTHMS

Within the world of electronic music, the beat is everything. Particularly if your music is designed to be played in clubs or at raves or festivals, its impact is going to live or die on the strength of your drum groove. That’s why we spend a lot of time focussing on getting the right drum sounds; from magesy download buying the best drum machines to gathering pristine sample packs. But having great magesy torrent drum sounds is only half the battle, what’s the use in having great magesy torrent sounding hits if you can’t arrange them into a killer drum groove? It’s that latter part of the equation we’re homing in on with this issue’s cover feature. Join us as we go in deep on constructing drum patterns, adding groove, switching things up for fills and turnarounds and exploring the depths of humanisation and creative polyrhthms.

Working with vocals can be tricky. More often than not, when there’s a vocal present in a track it automatically becomes the defining part of the composition. Whether it’s a short sampled hook, a full recorded lead vocal or a remix acapella, the quality, clarity and tone of the vocal line can leave a lasting impression on the listener and define how they hear your track. While, naturally, the source material plays a major role, how you process and mix vocals can totally transform the end result. In this month’s cover feature, we’re digging into the multitude of ways we can work with vocals to bring out the best in them. Whether you’re looking to refine a recorded vocal, flip a short sample or enhance an acapella, we’ve got ideas and tips to help you along.

There’s an often repeated cliche that mastering is a kind of ‘dark art’ – a deep and impenetrable science that is beyond the capabilities of mere mortals. However, given the amount of tutorials, courses and mass-market plugins out there, all designed to tackle the mastering process, this is clearly nonsense.  That’s not to say that the process doesn’t require a fair amount of skill and expertise, but given the power of modern DAWs and plugins, these are now techniques that even the most cash-strapped producer can get to grips with at home. In this issue’s cover feature, we’ll introduce you to the tools, theory and essential skills you’ll need to get to grips with mastering in your DAW.

This months samples cover two huge genres, one in terms of its influence and one for the speed at which it is spreading. First up is the fast developing genre of Dubstep, currently big in the UK and making its way across the globe. The second is Kraftwerk, although not really a genre they as an act certainly spawned a few and this months sample collection should have exactly that effect. Our Retro collection this month is a classic Broken Beat collection split into easy to use Kits.

              NEW GEAR 2018

Traditionally, January always brings a flood of new music technology gear, as companies break out their latest releases for the NAMM trade show in California, and this year is no different.  Being just a few weeks in, it might be a little too early to call it, but here at FM we’re starting to feel like 2018 could be an especially good year for electronic music makers. Case in point, the two new hardware synths on this issue’s cover. First we have the Prologue, the grown-up sibling of one of our favourite synths in recent years, Korg’s Minilogue, which blends some genuinely impressive digital tricks with its classic analogue innards. Plus, we’re going in deep with Arturia’s MiniBrute 2 the beefed-up, semimodular reimagining of their popular analogue monosynth.
