The Dulciano is a grand piano performed with dulcimer hammers. This unique hybrid instrument produces a similar timbre to a dulcimer or cimbalom, but the longer strings and large soundboard of the piano gives the instrument a richer tone and longer sustain. The instrument also has a much wider playable range than a standard dulcimer or cimbalom (A0 to E6). As with all our libraries, the goal of this instrument was to make it as easy to play as possible. We captured multiple dynamics, controlled by velocity. The highest velocities trigger short one-shot rolls – an articulation commonly used in dulcimer music. Continuous, sustained rolls are triggered by bringing up the mod wheel, or by using your keyboard’s aftertouch (channel pressure). The Dulciano was recorded in a modern concert hall environment (the same hall as many of our other libraries), and includes three configurable microphone positions, providing a great magesy torrent level of flexibility for placing the instrument in your mix. The close mics are almost fully dry, offering an intimate ‘studio’ sound when soloed. The far mics have just the right amount of ambience for a distant, spacious sound, without being drenched in reverb. The ‘perspective’ slider below the mixer allows you to easily move between a close and distant mix. We have also included a built-in convolution reverb, offering even more control over the amount of space in the mix.

Instruments include grand pianos, rhodes, whurlitzer, various jazz guitars, bass, flute, saxophone, trumpet, flugelhorn and vibraphone. Each stereo sample was processed and mixed on analog consoles and pre-mastered with LA-2A limiters for that rich vintage tube saturation sound.
Our Montclarion Hall Grand Piano is a classic Steinway 1926 parlor grand. It was captured in three microphone positions (close, mid and far), to allow custom and surround mixing. It has a crisp, solid tone ideal for classical composing, as well as soul, jazz, rock and pop. It also contains a broad string effects section including glisses, sweeps, slams, plucks and more. The Montclarion Hall Piano was recorded in a steep A-framed long hall that truly resonates with us. It was the same room that we recorded Mars, Venus and the Apocalypse Percussion Ensemble in. It has a lush, rich, clear and yet well-defined and well-controlled natural sound. In our ears, something about this magical room combined perfectly with this piano, creating the right holistic balance that felt both instantly inspiring and somehow unique. The true instrument here is the piano and the hall, as one singular being.

Fun fact. There aren’t many useable, let alone good free piano libraries. I was putting together a list of the best free pianos for our blog and YouTube channel, and after trying out about 20 freebies, I was shocked at how bad most of them are. Why Denver? It’s admittedly not the first city you think of when you picture a grand piano. But Denver is the city where Echo Sound Works started. Denver is where I went to college to study music. That’s why we jumped at the chance to sample a Piano from magesy download my old stomping grounds.
Austrian Grand piano was sampled from magesy download a 100 year old Bruder Mikula Wien Austrian grand through a pair of AEA R84 ribbon microphones into an AEA TRP ribbon microphone preamp. Prior to recording, the piano’s hammer felts were sanded down to warm them up a bit. The piano was sampled in stereo under the lid, because that’s where the tone sounded best, at a sample rate of 44.1 kHz. It took many weeks to sample the piano entirely, as it was in such a state that most of the tuning pegs could no longer hold a pitch for any length of time. The piano was sampled labriously, with the softest to loudest dynamics being played, resulting in a library that can boast 10 velocity layers and 2 note round-robin.
