              Some years ago, an old friend of mine – Dan McCullough (not to be confused with Dan, Dan, the Novachord man) – sent me some samples from magesy download a brightly coloured, 8-voice analogue polysynth, made in Japan and named after a planet (sorry to be vague but although it’s perfectly kosher to sample an analogue synth, one has to be be very careful with regard to manufacturer and products names – I am sure you get the gist though!).                 There are PWMs, sawtooths and ramps in there with some detune. We added a hint of ‘iSaw’ from magesy download Techtron and a smattering of half speed ‘Tron creating a huge sound which was re-sampled into a composite. This was then thrown at the MLM ‘Lite’ GUI. With a few tweaks (replacing Cronk’s All-Pass filter with a lowpass filter, for example), it made some nice sounds and so Stringodyne came to being. It’s something of a ‘one trick pony’ in a way but there are mighty sounds to be had that are wide and expansive, capable of big and lush strings, smooth ‘Last Temptation Of Christ’ Peter Gabriel style Prophet 5 (through his Boss CE1 chorus) pads and drones, spacey Tomita sweeps and, with everything wide open, big, anthemic techno stabs, hits, pads and leadlines. And all this passes to a comprehensive effects section…

                      Zero-1 is in essence a single oscillator virtual analog synthesizer (VA) loosely based on the CS01 monosynth which was released in 1982 as an affordable entry into the world of analog synthesis… but with a twist! Rather than simply sample the basic DCO oscillators from magesy download the original instrument I thought it might be more interesting to first pass them through a tube overdrive and Watkins Copicat tape delay. Mangling the raw oscillators in this manner injected a significant amount of character and movement to the original waveforms – even the splice in the tape loop adds something! Five oscillators were multi-sampled in 24-bits in this manner: triangle, sawtooth, 50% square, 25% square and PWM.
