Collection of melodic percussion was inspired by the music found on the Pacific Coast of Nicaragua and recorded on location with performances by Nicaraguan musicians Carlos Luis Mejía and Evenor Gonzalez. The pack was conceived with the intention to capture the country’s distinct marimbas in their pure form, while also processing them through modular Eurorack gear for electronic experimentalists. Nicaraguan marimbas feature extended tubular resonators unlike other marimbas, that produce harmonics similar to the effect of overdrive. Two instruments were added to the sessions (Guitarrilla and a modified version of an Atabal) to accompany and demonstrate the Son Nica rhythm. The sounds in this collection were recorded with a pair of Oktava MK-012-01 microphones through an Apogee Element 24 and processed through Eurorack modules (Morphagene, Prism and uClouds), Cecilia 5 and GRM Tools. Multi-sample presets for Ableton Simpler allow you to perform and compose new creations with your own virtual marimbas.

The Musser Grand Concert Marimba was made in the 1970s and has 4.3 octaves of Rosewood bars upon Aluminium resonators. The African Marimba and Udu is a collection of sampled African instruments recorded at the world famous MGM Scoring Stage at Sony Pictures Studios in Los Angeles. The African Marimba contains mallet and stick hits recorded at varying dynamics with up to 5 round robins. This instrument features a new SOFT ATTACK slider that softens the onset of each note. The African Marimba also features a roll generator similar to that in the Dulcimer and Zither library. When the mod wheel is set to a value higher than 0, the patch plays a roll with dynamics controlled by the modwheel. This can be combined with the SOFT ATTACK feature to create interesting textures and pads.

The Marimba is a relative of the xylophone, distinct for its large, typically semi-tubular resonators found underneath the keys, and larger range than its smaller counterpart. Its history is complex, having early origins in Africa and Central America, but it found a prominent home in the halls of America’s Vaudeville at the start of the 20th Century. Paradise Marimba, an extensively-sampled five octave marimba with a gorgeous tone. We collaborated with Chris Poehler of Lujon Audio to produce Paradise Marimba. While many other marimba libraries tend to sound very percussive and bright, we specifically selected this marimba for its warm, full sustain. The lowest two octaves of the marimba was so rich-sounding that we sampled it with softer bass marimba mallets as an alternate option to the standard mallets. These bass marimba mallets work excellently for ambient, cinematic music.
