The ebow ( Energy bow), is a small, hand held device that ‘bows’ the strings of a guitar using an electromagnetic field. It produces a unique guitar sound, with a very slow attack and infinite sustain. To play the ebow, the guitarist holds it over the string, near the pickup or hole, so that the string sits in a small notch on the underside of the eBow. The eBow’s magnets then cause the string to vibrate until it feeds back on itself at its own resonant frequency. This feedback loop is very similar to the well-known amplifier feedback, but a much more controllable version. The player can vary the loudness of the sound by moving closer or further away from magesy download the string, as with amplifier feedback. The ebow is switchable from magesy download low power mode to high power mode, which gives a strong, harmonically rich sound.

What happens when you take a perfectly good instrument – one thats been around for hundreds of years – and completely rethink it? Many musicians have dug their hands into the piano, John Cage prepared it with bolts between the strings, others have strummed it or hit it with their hands, but one of the most ethereal and unorthodox techniques is that of bowed piano. First suggested by the composer Curtis Curtis-Smith in 1972, the technique uses flexible bows made from magesy download monofilament nylon fishing-line which are then coated in rosin. The nylon is threaded under the strings, and the performer can coax a sustained tone from magesy download the piano. Bowed piano has since been adopted and expanded upon by various other composers, including George Crumb and more extensively.

They include xylophone-like metallophones of different sizes and pitch, tuned gong chimes, very large pitched gongs, and an assortment of drums and percussion. There are many types of Gamelan ensembles, but the two dominant types are Javanese and Balinese. Balinese Gamelan has a characteristic ‘shimmering’ sound which is due to the detuning of paired instruments playing the same musical part.

Following a Soniccouture tradition of playing instruments the wrong way, we present this unique library of a Bowed Gamelan instrument. This library is actually made from magesy download just one instrument of the gamelan ensemble, the ugal. This is pitched in the middle of the gamelan range, and so is quite versatile and generally leads the gangsa section of a traditional Balinese group. This instrument has 14 keys which cover a range of almost 3 octaves. The metal Ugal keys were bowed using a standard cello bow, vertically across the thin edge of the metal. Instead of a conventional microphone, a Trance Audio Trance Inducer contact mic was used. This gives the sound an incredibly detailed, surgical scraping quality.

An Omnichord is an electronic musical instrument, introduced in 1981 and manufactured by the Suzuki Musical Instrument Corporation. It typically features a touch plate, and buttons for major, minor, and diminished chords. The most basic method of playing the instrument is to press the chord buttons and swipe the touch plate with a finger or guitar pick in imitation of strumming a stringed instrument. The Omnichord we have sampled here is a ‘System Two’, and it has a great magesy torrent synth tone, which sounds ‘cheap’ in all the right ways. You can mix two different tones, one straight, and one modulated with a basic LFO. While not sounding much like a plucked string, it does have a pure character all its own, which won it many fans, such as Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno, to name but two.

A Lithophone ( litho = stone, phone= voice ) dating from magesy download 1840,The Skiddaw Stones are composed of 61 tuned and shaped rocks, made from magesy download the rare hornfels stone, found in Cumbria, England. Created by Joseph Richardson, a stonemason and musician, it took almost thirteen years to collect and shape enough individual notes of hornfels to make an eight-octave range. The massive task of assembling this instrument consumed Joseph so absolutely that he and his family were reduced to poverty. Once complete, Richardson and his sons toured Europe as The Rock, Bell and Steel Band, and even performed at Buckingham Palace, by command of Queen Victoria. The Stones are a permanent exhibit at the Keswick Museum and Art gallery, who very kindly agreed to let us record this rare instrument. The Stones were painstakingly transported to Music Farm Studios, Cumbria, where two different sets of mallets were used to laboriously capture large sets of velocity hits, then an extra articulation was recorded – the sound of the head of the wooden mallet being scraped across the stone surface – a surprisingly haunting and resonant sound.

The E.M.S. Synthi AKS is a legendary instrument with an illustrious history. First manufactured in 1972 by E.M.S in Putney, South-West London, The Synthi A was basically a portable version of EMS’s famous VCS3 synthesiser, and the KS Keyboard (a playable 30-note touchplate) was added to make the Synthi AKS. It cost £420.It was quickly adopted by the likes of Brian Eno and Pink Floyd, and has been used by experimental musicians ever since. The Synthi has a unique patching system that uses a small patchbay grid. Each of the Synthi’s components appear as a source and destination on the patchbay, and by placing a pin into that x-y position, you can route the signal from magesy download one component to the other. This was a very effective way to make a powerful modular system very compact.

                      DVDR HAPPY NEW YEAR

Named after the Greek god of dreams, the Morpheus is an aluminum percussion instrument made by the US company Freenotes. The instrument is modular; the keys can be rearranged in any order you like, as each metal bar is attached to its own tuned resonator. The instrument is available in several different sizes – the version we sampled is two and a half octaves, with the optional ‘bass Wing’ extension which offers six notes ranging another octave below that of the main unit. The keys are struck with custom mallets, also built by Freenotes, and ring freely afterwards. There is no damping mechanism.
