The instrument has a colourful history and is instantly associated with the sound of the Caribbean carnival. It’s the perfect complement to the genre’s increased use of triplet hi-hats, punchy snares, and low basslines. The ethereal, hollow tones of the steel pan add brightness without adding too much levity. In this Originals pack, accomplished and acclaimed pannist Freddy Harris III crafted steel pan sounds specifically to be used in hip hop and trap beats. As one of the more recently invented percussion instruments, it’s usefulness across different genres is only now being explored. The subtleness of beautifully crafted Double Second Steelpans was captured in great magesy torrent detail with Beyerdynamic Ribbon and Neumann large diaphragm condenser microphones. Additional saturation and vibe were imparted via classic Universal Audio LA-610 tube preamps.
