Using Superball friction mallets, we sampled a variety of Orchestral Bass Drums, Timpani, Taiko, Thunder Sheet and Gongs to create a library of evolving sonic textures.. Superball is a rare type of mallet with a rubber ball end, which is used by percussionists to create a unique waling drone-like sound. It is performed by dragging the rubber head of the mallet along a surface, creating friction, which produces a wave of unusual and unique sonic textures that vary depending on the size of the Superball, type of percussion and technique. Superball is a non-transient sound that open-endedly shapes and transforms as the motion, pressure and intensity of dragging of the mallet continues.

In over 2 days of session time, we captured the wonderful sound of an orchestral timpani with it´s many different facets in one of our favorite venues: The Teldex scoring stage in Berlin. The same stage where we recorded Berlin Woodwinds and THE Glock. THE Timpani is the first library of it´s kind with True Damping Control, which enables you to dampen the skin on a very natural way by using special recorded release samples. The instrument was played by Sebastian Trimolt (credits includes soundtrack recordings for “The International” and Blue Man Group).

The Timpani, also known as Kettle Drums, are a set of 3-5 large, bowl-shaped drums tuned to pitches that create a strong, resonant sound, perhaps best known from magesy download its bold appearance in Also Sprach Zarathustra. Over six hours of raw recording went into this virtual instrument, originally yielding 1,300 samples. We’ve paired it down to the best of those and balanced it out across velocities and notes to create a highly playable instrument with a broad dynamic range and an exceptionally punchy top velocity.

We decided to sample the beautiful and exceptional crafted Adams Timpanis, with CalfSkin heads. The main reason was to record these timpanis with a perspective to fill the final gaps between samples and reality. Why Calfskin ? We found in Animal skin everything we were looking for, a warmer, thicker sound ,rich harmonics and timbre quality . We also wanted to reach the limits in terms of power and aggressivity. That’s why for this first volume we recorded with Baroque Mallets. One of the major quality of this instrument is it’s capacity of perfect blending into any mixes. We keep the presence and the punch without smashing the rest of the orchestra. Sometimes when it comes to mix, virtual Timpanis may sound too big and massive (moody mix) but with our instrument you don’t need any audio process, it’s plug and play.
