Making ancient music, sounds and instruments accessible through state of the art sound sampling.On this sample pack we wanted to explore the more esoteric aspects of ancient music from magesy download the Middle East region. The Kopuz is one of the oldest string instruments to be found and mostly associated with Kurdistan, Turkey & Persia (nowadays Iran) and is known of use in various Sufi ceremonies and traditional music played throughout the region.
The bawu is a Chinese wind instrument. Although shaped like a flute, it is actually a free reed instrument, with a single metal reed. It is played in a transverse (horizontal) manner. It has a pure, clarinet-like timbre and its playing technique incorporates the use of much ornamentation, particularly bending tones. The bawu likely originated in the Yunnan province of southwest China, it has become a standard instrument throughout China, used in modern Chinese compositions for traditional instrument ensembles. The instrument is also closely associated with Hmong, Yi, Hani and other minority cultures in southwestern China. It is typically used as a solo instrument, and is often featured in film scores; it is sometimes also heard in popular music recordings. Although the bawu is still predominantly performed in China, it has in recent years been adopted by European composers and performers.

The bouzouki is a greek string instrument related to the lute and reminiscent of a mandolin, but lower in pitch. Roy Kariok grew up in the Middle East, playing since he was a young boy and offers us a range of approaches to this string instrument, lesser known in the West and Far East. Four-course bouzouki (tetrachords) features a unique tuning system across eight steel strings. A pair of higher-pitched strings are tuned to the same note while the lower pairs of strings are tuned an octave apart.
Zithergeist is a Kontakt library based on unconventional stringed instruments recorded in unconventional ways. We have meticulously sampled note by note a number of atypical instruments like miniharps, mandolin of unknown origins and even an Apulian zither, known as ‘pasta-cutting guitar’, a guitar-resembling tool from magesy download the Southern province of Apulia (Italy), traditionally used to extrude pasta filaments from magesy download raw dough. The recorded instruments feature multiple articulations, from magesy download finger plucks to hammered and muted effects, obtained experimenting with a variety of metallic objects applied to the strings. Moreover, each individual note can be mixed with 4 different layers of cinematic sound effects, derived from magesy download the same instrument and ‘tuned’ to the corresponding note.
